Rats

Rattus norvegicus also known as Brown rat , common rat , Norway rat ,sewer rat, whichever name you use the need for control is clear , they are responsible for spreading disease and damaging property Originating in Asia, they are omnivorous which has contributed to their success.  They reach maturity in 2 to 3 months and have an average litter size of 9 up to three times a year .

Effective control can take several forms , the use of traps , rodenticide and removing any cover and harbourage in addition removal of  any water source ..After treatment a disinfection treatment is recommended .

Mice

Mus domesticus or house mouse originated in central Asia and has reportedly been in the Uk since the 9th century .

The house mouse is omnivorous and unlike the rat it does not need to drink every day it can survive on food with a moisture content as low as 15% . Maturity is reached at 6 to 8 weeks they can produce a litter up to 8 times a year with an average size of 6 .

Effective control is similar to rats although they tend to feed from many different points so more bait stations may be required. After treatment of any rodent infestation a good disinfectant should be used to clean all areas .
